Livelihood of the socio-economic deprived sections is one of the most serious issues of rural India. Presently, climate change is a major challenge for the livelihoods based on agriculture and allied sector. As a result, rural livelihoods and food security of billions of people in the world is under sever threat. Agriculture sector is most vulnerable to climate change due to its high dependence on climate and weather. More than 60 per cent of the population in India is directly or indirectly relying on agriculture as a source of livelihood. In India, the past couple of decades witnessed, a massive shift of employment out of agriculture leading to a rapid increase in the rates of labour migration. This sudden change brings about a much difficult situation for both the rural and urban livelihood and environment
ISWAR, in association with people, people’s organizations, research agencies, government, donor agencies and angel investors is looking for the alternatives to rise from this situation. In its endeavour to save the rural livelihood ISWAR, is actively involved in promoting environment friendly agriculture and allied activities in different parts of the country. ISWAR is focusing on practices those move hand in hand with promotion of rural livelihood and climate action.
ISWAR, believes in strict adherence of pro-climate behaviour in its words and action. In fulfilling its climate responsibility ISWAR, is involved in promotion of climate smart energy alternatives for the resource poor rural community. The organisation is in a process of addressing the climate issues related to rural household energy consumption and planning in a big way for alternative smart energy solutions.
Promotion of people’s organisation is one of the core competencies of ISWAR. It has set up a mark in mobilization of various people’s organizations. Promotion of farmer’s cooperatives, producer’s company, women self-help groups, village development committees, water user’s committees and youth clubs are various models successfully promoted through ISWAR’s facilitation. These models are moving ahead encompassing all sections of society and working on the principle of need based economic, social, cultural, and political empowerment. During its three decades of journey, ISWAR gained experience in diverse sectors of development ranging from governance, rural livelihood, human right, women empowerment to climate action, green energy, carbon sequestration and climate smart livelihood.
During its’ three decades of involvement in transformation of economic, social, cultural and political empowerment of marginalized and resource poor sections, ISWAR emphasised on empowered community and society to lead life with security, dignity, and prosperity.
